FAREWELL | THE FINAL DAY
DAWN OF THE FINAL DAY
Morning dawns bright and early on the group's final day in the temple. The early risers are free to move about as they please - but around midmorning, those who are still sleeping will be gently roused from their slumber, and everyone will find themselves drawn to the courtyard for once final announcement.
All of the living gods - plus Patience - are there, and they wait for the entire group to assemble before the announcement begins. Patience herself is the one who bears the scroll of the final tally and unfurls it, reading it out for everyone to hear in a high, clear voice. With each word she speaks, the text etches itself onto the polished white stone columns that line the courtyard, displaying the following:
...and just like that, it's over. A sense of certainty settles over everyone present - Piety has become the new leader of the pantheon.
He doesn't quite look surprised, not after the group's discussion the day before. He does look determined. With a smile, he addresses everyone gathered there. "Thank you for believing in me," he says, short and simple and to the point. And then he looks to the other gods - they have promises to keep.
The gods nod, and they all concentrate.
One by one, the participants that died during the competition begin to appear in the courtyard, in reverse order - Zoe appears first, and Shiki appears last. The process repeats itself with the two dead gods: after Shiki, Ruin appears, and a few moments later, so does Fortune. Ruin strides forward to take her place among the gods, and Fortune glances at the words etched on the columns before doing the same.
Sincerity speaks up then. "You did it, everyone. We're gonna give you a chance to say your goodbyes, of course - and to have a good time. We've got a banquet set up in the dining hall for anyone who's hungry. There'll be food there throughout the day. And, like... some of you didn't get to see all of the areas we made." He waves a hand, and the two doors for the east and west wings seem to duplicate themselves, dotting the walls with a total of thirteen doors. "Spend some time with everyone before you take off. Have some fun."
However, all things must eventually come to an end. At the very end of the day, as the sun is beginning to set and everyone has had a chance to spend some time with each other and say their goodbyes, the group finds themselves gathered at the temple's entrance, staring down at the steps that descend down into the clouds.
"When you're ready to go, just walk down the stairs," Ambition explains. "If any of you really don't want to remember this, you won't remember it once you make it through the clouds. By the time you get home, any of you that got a wish should see it take effect. ...and you don't necessarily have to go back to your own world, either. Walking down those doors will take you to wherever you want to be. If you want to go home with someone else, do it."
...as people are leaving, though, she looks through the crowd until her gaze rests on one person in particular.
"Catra," she adds. "Since you were alive for the final tally... you have one last choice to make. If you choose to stay here, you can take Fortune's place in the pantheon, if you want." She pauses, letting the implications of that sink in. "Think about it, and make your choice. If you go home, Fortune will regain her place as a god. If you stay, she'll become mortal again and go back to her own world."
